2. The applicant requests that his DD Form 214, Report of Transfer or Discharge, be corrected to reflect all of the campaign medals to which he is entitled as a result of his service in Vietnam and an airborne training course that he completed.

3. In support of his request, he provides documentation showing that he was awarded the Air Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and a diploma for completion of the Airborne Course on 18 June 1969.

4. After reviewing his request, the US Army Reserve Personnel Center (ARPERCEN) determined that, in addition to the awards noted above, he was also entitled to the Vietnam Service Medal with silver service star, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, the Parachutist Badge, the Expert Badge with rifle and machine gun bars, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm, and the Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal. A DD Form 215, Correction of DD Form 214, reflecting all of the aforementioned awards, was issued to him on 12 June 1996.

5. Based upon the copies of the diploma from the Airborne Course that he provided with his application, credit for completing this course should also be reflected on his DD Form 214.

CONCLUSIONS:

1. The ARPERCEN has administratively corrected his DD Form 214 to show all of the awards to which he is entitled as a result of his Vietnam service.

2. The documentation that he provided appears to authenticate his contention that he completed the Airborne Course. This information should, therefore, be reflected on his DD Form 214 as well.

3. In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.

RECOMMENDATION:

That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by showing that the individual concerned completed the Airborne Course on 18 June 1969.

BOARD VOTE:

The evidence of record does not show he was previously awarded the Purple Heart; however, it does show he was wounded and he refused evacuation and treatment (and a possible award of the Purple Heart) for the sake of helping other, more seriously wounded Soldiers within his unit. Therefore, it would be appropriate to award him the Army Good Conduct Medal (1st Award) and to correct his DD Form 214 to show this award.
