2. The applicant requests that he be awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received in France during World War II.
3. He states he was injured by a German concussion grenade causing him to bleed from the nose and ears, but he never received his Purple Heart.
4. The applicant has provided a copy of his release from active duty physical examination which states that he suffered a concussion injury from a shell which resulted in his hospitalization in France for 1 week in December 1944.
5. Army Regulation 600-8-22, Military Awards, provides, in pertinent part, that the Purple Heart is awarded for a wound sustained as a result of hostile action. Substantiating evidence must be provided to verify that the wound was the result of hostile action, the wound must have required treatment by a medical officer, and the medical treatment must have been made a matter of official record.
CONCLUSIONS:
1. The applicant has provided evidence to substantiate that he should have been awarded the Purple Heart as a result of injuries suffered in World War II.
2. In view of the foregoing, the applicants records should be corrected as recommended below.
RECOMMENDATION:
That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by showing that the individual concerned was awarded the Purple Heart as a result of enemy action in France in December 1944.
