BOARD DATE: 18 December 2012 DOCKET NUMBER: AR20120010374 THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE: 1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any). 2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any). THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE: 1. The applicant requests correction of his dates of service in Iraq listed in item 18 (Remarks) of his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty). 2. The applicant states, in effect, the year of the beginning date of his service in Iraq should be 2008 and not 2009 as listed in item 18 of his DD Form 214 for the period ending 28 February 2012. 3. The applicant provides the documents identified in his application in support of his request. CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE: 1. The record shows the applicant enlisted in the Regular Army on 27 January 2007. He was trained in and awarded military occupational specialty 31B (Military Police) and specialist (SPC)/E-4 is the highest rank/grade he held and served in on active duty. 2. Section I (Assignment Information – Overseas Service Deployment Combat Duty) of the applicant's Enlisted Record Brief (ERB) shows he served in Iraq for 15 months from 27 June 2008 to 5 September 2009. 3. On 28 February 2012, the applicant was honorably retired in the rank of SPC/E-4 by reason of permanent disability. 4. The DD Form 214 issued to the applicant upon his retirement on 28 February 2012 shows he completed a total of 5 years, 1 month, and 2 days of active military service. Item 18 contains an entry documenting his Iraq service and lists the dates of this service as "20090627-20090905." A review of the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) pay record of the applicant confirms he served in Iraq between June 2008 and September 2009. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The applicant's request to correct the beginning date of his Iraq service in item 18 of the DD Form 214 in question has been carefully considered and found to have merit. The evidence of record confirms the applicant served in Iraq from 27 June 2008 to 5 September 2009 as evidenced by entries on his ERB and DFAS pay record. Therefore, the beginning year of his Iraq service was clearly entered in item 18 of his DD Form 214 as a result of an administrative error and should be corrected at this time. As a result, the Board recommends that all Department of the Army records of the individual concerned be corrected by deleting the current Iraq service entry in item 18 of the DD Form 214 in question and replacing it with the entry "SERVICE IN IRAQ FROM 20080627-20090905." __________x_______________ CHAIRPERSON I certify that herein is recorded the true and complete record of the proceedings of the Army Board for Correction of Military Records in this case.
