IN THE CASE OF: BOARD DATE: 27 May 2010 DOCKET NUMBER: AR20090020229 THE BOARD CONSIDERED THE FOLLOWING EVIDENCE: 1. Application for correction of military records (with supporting documents provided, if any). 2. Military Personnel Records and advisory opinions (if any). THE APPLICANT'S REQUEST, STATEMENT, AND EVIDENCE: 1. The applicant requests that his prior active service be entered on his DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) in item 12d (Total Prior Active Service) for the period ending 4 November 2009. 2. The applicant states the Department of Veterans Affairs requires all active service to be recorded on a veteran's last DD Form 214. 3. The applicant provides a DD Form 214 for the period ending 4 November 2009 and a DD Form 214 for the period ending 1 November 1987. CONSIDERATION OF EVIDENCE: 1. The applicant's military records show that he was commissioned and entered active duty on 27 May 1981. He was awarded the area of concentration of armor and was promoted to the rank of captain. He was honorably released from active duty and transferred to a U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) troop program unit (TPU) on 1 November 1987. He had 6 years, 5 months, and 5 days of active service during that period. 2. The applicant remained assigned to a USAR TPU, served continuously, and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. 3. On 29 October 2008, the applicant entered active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was honorably released from active duty and returned to his USAR TPU on 4 November 2009. The DD Form 214 he was issued shows "SEE BLOCK #18" entered in item 12d and item 12e (TOTAL PRIOR INACTIVE SERVICE). Item 18 states in part "SEPARATED FROM SERVICE ON TEMPORARY RECORDS AND SOLDIER'S AFFIDAVIT//DD FORM 215 WILL BE ISSUED TO PROVIDE MISSING INFORMATION." DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: 1. It is evident that the applicant performed 6 years, 5 months, and 5 days of prior active service that should have been entered on his DD Form 214 for the period ending 4 November 2009. 2. In addition, while not requested by the applicant, it would also be appropriate to enter his prior inactive service on this DD Form 214. The applicant served 20 years, 11 months, and 28 days of inactive service between the date of his release from active duty on 1 November 1987 and the date he entered active duty in 2009. 3. In view of the foregoing, it would be appropriate to correct the applicant's records as recommended below.
