2. The applicant requests that his records be corrected to show that (a) he qualified expert on the M14 and M16 rifle and .45 caliber pistol; (b) he is entitled to 1 battle star (sic); (c) he is entitled to award of the Purple Heart (PH); and, (d) he completed basic combat training (BCT) and advanced individual training (AIT). 3. On 22 September 1969, he was inducted into the Army of the United States. 4. During the period 29 September-13 November 1969, he was assigned to a special training unit; 14 November 1969- 16 January 1970, BCT; and, 17 January-12 April 1970, AIT (MOS 13A, Field Artillery Basic). On 9 December 1969, while in basic combat training, records show that he qualified sharpshooter with the M-14 rifle. 5. On 5 February 1970, he accepted nonjudicial punishment under Article 15, Uniform Code of Military Justice, for being absent without leave for the period 23 January- 3 February 1970. His punishment included a forfeiture, restriction and extra duty. 6. During the period 7 May 1970-6 May 1971, he served in a unit in the Republic of Vietnam. 7. AR 600-8-22, Military Awards, indicates, in pertinent part, that: a. the PH is awarded for wounds caused by hostile action and requiring medical treatment with a record being made and b. bronze service stars are authorized for each designated campaign. From 1 May to 30 June 1970 was the DA Sanctuary Counteroffensive Campaign and from 1 July 1970 to 30 June 1971 was the UN Counteroffensive Phase VII Campaign. CONCLUSIONS: 1. The evidence of record shows that he is entitled to have his record corrected to show his BCT and AIT completion. 2. There is no evidence to support his claim for the PH, battle star, or additional qualification on various weapons. 3. The evidence does show that he should be credited with one additional campaign. 4. In view of the foregoing, his record should be corrected, but only as shown below. RECOMMENDATION: 1. That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by showing he completed BCT, AIT and that he is credited with one additional bronze service star. 2.
