2.  The applicant requests correction of his military record to reflect that he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries suffered in Korea.

3.  The Purple Heart is not listed in the awards block of his DD Form 214, Report of Separation, but the facts of his wounding are listed in the block pertaining to wounds received as a result of action with enemy forces.

4.  The applicant’s medical record shows that he was wounded by shrapnel in the rectum and his DD Form 214 indicates that he was wounded near the Naktong River, Korea on 11 August 1950.

5. Army Regulation 600-8-22 provides, in pertinent part, that the Purple Heart is awarded for a wound sustained as a result of hostile action.  Substantiating evidence must be provided to verify that the wound was the result of hostile action, the wound must have required treatment by a medical officer, and the medical treatment must have been made a matter of official record.

CONCLUSIONS:

1.  The evidence of record shows that the applicant was a combat casualty as the result of the aforementioned shrapnel wounds and should be awarded the Purple Heart.

2.  In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below. 

RECOMMENDATION:

That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by showing the individual concerned was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained on 11 August 1950 as a result of enemy action in Korea.
