2.  The applicant requests correction of item 29 of his DD Form 214, Report of Separation, to reflect that he was wounded in action in Korea.

3.  He states that item 29 (wounds received as a result of action with enemy forces) of his DD Form 214 currently shows the entry “none”, but should show “head wound, Korea, 22 April 1951.”  In support of his request, he has included a copy of a Purple Heart Certificate showing him as the recipient.

4.  Item 29 of the applicant’s DD Form 214 does not reflect that he was wounded in action, nor does item 27 (decorations and awards) show that he was awarded the Purple Heart.

5.  Hospital admission information in his records, however, confirms that he was wounded in the head as a result of enemy action in Korea on 22 April 1951.

6. Army Regulation 600-8-22, Military Awards, provides, in pertinent part, that the Purple Heart is awarded for a wound sustained as a result of hostile action.  Substantiating evidence must be provided to verify that the wound was the result of hostile action, the wound must have required treatment by a medical officer, and the medical treatment must have been made a matter of official record.

CONCLUSIONS:

1.  The evidence of record shows that he was a combat casualty and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds suffered in Korea.

2.  In view of the foregoing, the applicant’s records should be corrected as recommended below.

RECOMMENDATION:

That all of the Department of the Army records related to this case be corrected by showing the individual concerned suffered a head injury in combat in Korea on 22 April 1951 and was awarded the Purple Heart.
